And before continuing, please note that this list is not exhaustive. You are therefore free to complete it through the comments.

Tip # 1: define stages in your trip

It seems that the holidays begin with the first kilometers. If you take my humble opinion, the person behind this adage didn't often have to travel with kids and tweens. Still, on the merits, she is not totally wrong.

Rather than focusing on the destination, it can be useful to take advantage of this long journey separating us from the place of our vacation to walk around and discover new regions. In this case, this option present in Google Maps should interest you a lot.

Not everyone necessarily knows it, but the solution allows you to define stages during our trip:

  1. Launch the app.
  2. Define your route by choosing the destination.
  3. Click on the three small dots next to “your location”.
  4. Go find the option “Add a stopover”.
  5. A new field appears in the route.
  6. Enter the name of the city of your choice.

Note that you also have the option of rearranging the order of the steps by dragging and dropping.

Tip # 2: Use Google Maps Offline

If you are traveling to France then you will not have to worry about the bandwidth used by Google Maps. It will be quite different if you go abroad, however. There, additional charges may apply if you consume a lot of data.

Fortunately, Google had the presence of mind to anticipate the problem and it is therefore possible to use the app offline.

The procedure is also quite simple:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Open the accordion menu in the app.
  3. Click on the “Offline Plan” option.
  4. Tap on the “Custom Plan” button.
  5. Move the map to the area of your choice.
  6. Click the "Download" button.

Please note that the downloaded data can reach 1725 MB depending on the zone of the card selected and it will therefore be preferable to be connected via WiFi to do so. Another important clarification is that the stored maps can be refreshed using the same menu.

Google Maps can also work offline.

Tip # 3: check restaurant wait times

On vacation, every second counts and that also means that you must do everything possible to avoid the problematic queues. Even more so if you are traveling with small children and they are not very patient.

Once again, Google Maps can be of great help to you. Not content with giving you another look at the world, the solution also indexes a good part of the restaurants and pubs of the world.

And it does not content itself with indexing them, since it also provides valuable information about them … such as waiting times for example.

To take advantage of this function, simply follow the following steps:

  1. Launch the app.
  2. Type the name of the restaurant in the search box.
  3. Pull the location sheet up to access all the information.
  4. Scroll down to the section called “rush hour”.

By default, Google Maps will show you the peak times for the day, but it will of course be possible to consult the data of the other days by performing horizontal swipes.

Tip # 4: remember where you parked your car

If you are the type to wander around neighborhoods in cities you visit, then this option should be of great interest to you.

Google Maps allows you to memorize the place where you park your car … and therefore to find it more easily afterwards.

And again, the brand to follow is pretty straightforward:

  1. Launch the app.
  2. Tap on the blue cursor representing your location.
  3. A menu appears before your eyes.
  4. Tap on the option “Set as parking spot”.

Google Maps will then create a marker corresponding to the place where you parked your car. It will remain visible on the map and it will allow you to easily find your vehicle by creating a route or by manually directing you to it.

Tip # 5: Make a list of places to see

Google Maps also allows you to plan your trips. At least to a certain extent.

The application effectively incorporates a system of bookmarks and therefore allows users to save any location to a personal list of favorite locations.

Nothing prevents you from moving virtually in the region in which you plan to spend your vacation to locate restaurants and places of interest to visit. Then, all you have to do is add them to this list to find them easily.

How? 'Or' What ? Thanks to a few fairly simple steps:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Launch a search on the restaurants or places of your choice.
  3. Find a restaurant worthy of your interest.
  4. Tap the "Save" button when you find one.
  5. Then select the “New List” option.
  6. Give a name to your list and validate your choice.

By default, Google Maps will offer you three different lists: Favorites, To Visit and Saved Places. You will of course be able to create new lists and these will be associated with your account.
