9 smartphones that marked my year 2019

9 smartphones that marked my year 2019

No doubt, 2019 has been a particularly good year for the manufacturers of the telephony market. The launches followed one another at a breakneck pace, with dozens of different references.

The period lends itself rather well to the exercise, here are the 9 smartphones that marked my year 2019.

Note: This selection is not ordered and it is therefore not a classification. Each of these devices is intended for a specific use and comparing them would make little sense, especially as their selling price can vary from simple to double.

Galaxy Note 10+: the king of productivity

We open the ball with the Galaxy Note 10, a Galaxy Note 10 that shines by its versatility, of course, but also by its functions focused on productivity.

If the format does not really revolutionize the genre, the Samsung terminal still has one thing that its competitors do not have: a stylus. A stylus that can also be stored directly in the phone case.

And that, clearly, that changes everything. Whether it's to quickly jot down a note in a meeting, jot down thoughts or even work on the plan of a video, this famous stylus quickly becomes a must.

Especially since behind, we still have a device that has a beautiful screen, significant computing power and a very good photo module. So it was impossible for me not to include him in this selection.

Most :

  • A current design, in tune with the times.
  • A screen to die for.
  • A well-balanced technical sheet.
  • A flexible photo module.
  • The stylus <3

The lessers :

  • Autonomy, too perfectible.

iPhone 11 Pro Max: the iPhone of all iPhones

We then continue with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which has also emerged as a very good surprise.

So it's true, the fundamentals don't change. But this iPhone still brings three interesting new features: the back plate which is in frosted glass and which is invulnerable to fingerprints, the photo module which is enriched with an ultra wide angle and its crazy autonomy.

Personally, without forcing, I take two days with a load. And being careful, I often reach the three days. And that, really, is extremely comfortable. And above all, it's almost unheard of on an iPhone.

Most :

  • A solid phone.
  • A neat design.
  • A versatile and capable photo module.
  • Foolproof computing power.
  • iOS <3
  • Autonomy, completely crazy <3

The lessers :

  • A notch that tires a little.
  • The weight.

OnePlus 7T Pro: a welcome evolution of the OnePlus 7 Pro

The OnePlus 7T Pro also deserves its place in this selection, and for good and simple reason: it is excellent, on all fronts.

The design is frankly successful, with a curved borderless screen that gives a lot of character to the device. As for the technical sheet, it is almost irreproachable. Especially on the photo part since OnePlus has revised its copy quite a bit in this area. I am thinking in particular of the macro mode which literally blew me away.

And when we see the brand's good progress over the year 2019, we say to ourselves that the year 2020 is likely to be truly fascinating.

Most :

  • A neat and modern design.
  • No notch or hole!
  • A solid technical sheet.
  • A very capable photo module.
  • OxygenOS <3

The lessers :

  • A little too close to the OnePlus 7 Pro?

OnePlus 7T: one of the best value for money on the market

And we continue with the OnePlus 7T. A OnePlus 7T which has brought enormous improvement to the range and which undoubtedly offers one of the best value for money on the market.

It suffices to list its characteristics to be convinced. The device indeed offers a 90 Hz OLED screen, but also a Snapdragon 855+, 8 GB of RAM, a photo module composed of three cameras, and all this for less than 600 € and with an extremely clean and user-friendly overlay … but also this famous macro mode that I mentioned just before.

All in a 20: 9 format which makes it very comfortable in the hand.

Most :

  • Modernized design.
  • A very comfortable size in the hand.
  • Computing power.
  • The flexibility of the photo module.
  • OxygenOS <3

The lessers :

  • The notch.

Pixel 4: the photophone that sublimates the ordinary

This selection would have been incomplete without the Pixel 4, a Pixel 4 whose many qualities make you completely forget its flaws.

So it's true, it's not the most borderless phone on the market and its storage space is a bit too small, as is its battery life, but you only need to take a few pictures to be won over. Whether in terms of dynamics, colorimetry, sharpness or even depth of field, it achieves almost flawlessly and it has everything you need to seduce photo enthusiasts.

Even those who are interested in astrophotography.

Most :

  • Computing power.
  • The photo, the photo, the photo, the photo again <3
  • The non-slip coating on the edges.

The lessers :

  • The design is a bit dated.
  • Storage capacity too limited.
  • Autonomy, very perfectible on the small model.

Xiaomi Mi Note 10: the most versatile photophone on the market

Disappointed with the Pixel 4's lack of photo versatility? No doubt, the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is for you.

It does not actually do things by halves and it thus embeds no less than 5 sensors at the rear, for a focal range ranging from ultra wide angle to 50x zoom, including wide angle and macro.

And this flexibility is extremely valuable since the terminal will be able to adapt to all situations.

Most :

  • The design, modern and neat.
  • The quality of the photos. <3
  • The flexibility of the photo module.
  • Autonomy. <3

The lessers :

  • The processor, a bit too winded.

Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro: the flagship at a broken price

We continue with another phone from Xiaomi, and not just any since it is the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro.

If he quickly shows his limits in the field of photography, he excels in everything else. A modern design, an uncompromising technical sheet, it has nothing to envy to other flagships on the market and it even has the luxury of being offered at a third of their price.

So if the photo isn't the most important thing to you, then you can go for it with your head down. And it is promised, you will not regret it.

Most :

  • The borderless design.
  • Computing power. <3
  • Autonomy.

The lessers :

  • The photo module, too perfectible.

Huawei P30 Pro: the quiet force

It's no secret, but it's been a tough year for Huawei and Honor. Donald Trump effectively passed a presidential decree that bans US companies from working with the Chinese giant. A decree that had a huge impact on the company's activity.

And quite frankly, if there hadn't been this decree, then it's the Mate 30 Pro that we would be talking about now. Except that I cannot recommend a device that is not entitled to Google applications.

Fortunately, the P30 Pro is not affected by the measure taken by the current tenant of the White House. And the best part is that its price has fallen quite a bit in recent months.

Most :

  • A current and modern design.
  • Comfortable computing power.
  • A very flexible photo module.
  • Excellent autonomy. <3

The lessers :

  • A lack of consistency between the three focal ranges.

Honor View 20: the accessible outsider

One of my big regrets this year is not having been able to test the Honor 20. Basically, the latter was indeed supposed to come out at the beginning of the year, and I had already reserved a slot for my tests, except that the American presidential decree pushed the manufacturer to postpone its release by several months.

And when the Honor 20 was finally available for loan, well I already had a dozen tests underway.

However, it was impossible for me not to mention Honor in this selection, and this is precisely what prompted me to replace the Honor 20 with the last device of the brand that I tested, namely the very good Honor. View 20.

An Honor View 20 whose price has dropped significantly in recent months and which can now be found around € 300. And frankly, 300 € for such a complete and well-balanced phone is not expensive to pay.

Most :

  • A devastating look. <3
  • A very well balanced technical sheet.
  • Excellent autonomy.

The lessers :

  • A photo module that does not go far enough.

And then ?

My selection ends there, and some of you may find it incomplete. This is completely normal, since it is based only on the devices that I have been able to test throughout this year.

And of course, I haven't been able to pick up all the phones that have been presented by the manufacturers over the past twelve months. So, do not hesitate to share your own favorites through the comments following the article.

Anyway, I think there are at least some devices worth mentioning. This is particularly the case of the Motorola One Zoom which pleasantly surprised me when I got started with the IFA, or even that of the Galaxy Fold. It's too expensive, it's not perfect and it's also a first version, but it still opens up the possibilities, just like the foldable Razr or Huawei's Mate X.
