Nest organized an evening in Paris this week to present its latest products. I was invited to the event and was lucky enough to be able to take control of the company's thermostat, smoke detector and surveillance camera. I took the opportunity to make a short video to present them to you. Want to see more ? You couldn't have been happier.
First of all, be aware that this article is not intended to present all the functions of these products. It is more of an overview. Nest should, however, send me some test products soon.
And there, we will have the opportunity to go into a little more detail, it is promised.
Nest has chosen not to renew its thermostat for the moment. The firm has preferred to focus on its other products for the moment in order to enrich its ecosystem.
Be reassured all the same because its engineers did not rest on their laurels so far and they thus developed a software update gathering many improvements.
In particular, the thermostat will be able to connect to the smoke detector to display alerts and it will even be able to shut off the boiler in the event of a carbon monoxide leak. Automatic programming will also be more relevant. The same goes for self-absence.
I was able to play with the device for a few minutes and I admit I was pleasantly surprised by its lines, finishes and ergonomics. It is indeed very easy to learn.
The installation may seem complicated, but it is not since it suffices to replace the existing thermostat with this one.
And if your apartment or your house is not equipped, then know that the device can also be placed on an independent station. It will then suffice to connect the second box provided in the box to the boiler and voila.
The Nest Thermostat is available from 219 euros .
Nest also took advantage of the evening to present the new version of its smoke detector.
It's not really a secret but the first version caused a lot of problems for the company, because of this famous gesture which allowed to deactivate it remotely.
The company has therefore chosen to ignore this function. To control the device, it will be necessary to rely on the mobile application developed by the manufacturer.
There are other novelties, of course. The Nest Protect 2.0 is thus entitled to new lines and it is even 11% thinner than the previous generation. It is also equipped with a bright LED which will change color depending on the status of the device. Ah, and he can always talk to us, of course.
In addition, the detector is also equipped with a Bluetooth LE chip to communicate with our telephone.
Under the hood, we're going to find a carbon monoxide detector and a dual spectrum sensor capable of detecting fast-starting fires and slow-starting fires.
The Nest Protect 2.0 is offered at 119 euros on the brand's store.
But the real star of the evening was obviously the Nest Cam. And for good reason since it is the last product imagined by the manufacturer.
Some of you probably know it, but the camera is based on the Dropcam. However, it does not inherit the same lines and the manufacturer thus takes care to reduce its size as much as possible. Better, he also designed a foot capable of pivoting, a foot provided with a magnetic attachment.
The Nest Cam can sit on any flat surface, of course, but you can also hang it on a metal plate or even on the kitchen fridge.
Otherwise, well it can also shoot 1080p at 30 frames per second and its wide-angle optics will reach a field of view of 130 °. In addition, the device is equipped with eight infrared LEDs and its night vision offers a range of six meters. Nest has also made sure to protect it against the main techniques of blindness.
The manufacturer has provided it with a microphone and a speaker. It will therefore be possible to use it to talk at a distance.
The Nest Cam is available today from 199 euros .
On the sidelines, Nest has also developed a specific service designed for the camera.
Nest Aware will allow users to access a full 10 or 30 day history depending on the plan chosen. The solution also integrates powerful algorithms capable of detecting and eliminating false positives. Better, thanks to it, it will even be possible to define an activity zone to be monitored.
Price side, it will take 10 euros per month for a history of ten days, or 30 euros per month for a history of thirty days. If you buy a Nest Cam before August 4, you'll get a 60-day trial offer.
