BQ is closely interested in the French market. It has even just launched a tablet and a phone in the territory. The latter has been accompanying me for several days and you will be able to discover in this article my first impressions about the Aquaris E5 4G . With a nice video as a bonus, story that you can examine it from all angles.
Before going any further, know that BQ has decided to give a copy of its phone to a reader of the , and therefore to one of you. If you want to try your luck, it's not complicated since you just have to leave a comment at the end of this article .
I would also like to point out that this operation will influence neither this handling nor the test which will be published next week. I will point out the strengths and weaknesses of the terminal, as I do systematically with all the products that pass through my hands.
Since the time, you must start to know the song, right? As usual, I will start with a brief reminder of the technical characteristics of the beast, so that everyone has them well in mind.
The BQ Aquaris E5 4G is positioned on the mid-range with a 5-inch IPS OGS screen capable of displaying an HD-type definition , for a resolution of 720 × 1280. It is quite bright (450 nits) and its viewing angle covers 178 °. In any case, this is the information given by the manufacturer .
Under the hood, we will find a Qualcomm 410 processor made up of four cores clocked at 1.2 GHz, with an Adreno 306 GPU and 1 GB of RAM . Note that the on-board chip gives pride of place to 64-bit and it will therefore be perfectly able to take advantage of the next version of Android.
The storage space reaches 16 GB, and it will be possible to supplement it through the onboard micro SD port. On the photo side, we will find a main sensor of 13 million pixels and a front camera of 5 million pixels.
The WiFi 802.11 b / g / n responds, the same for Bluetooth 4.0 and 4G / LTE. Added to this is a 2850 mAh battery.
The E5 4G is quite compact (143.15 x 72.15 x 8.7mm) and it runs on a stock version of KitKat 4.4. Since we're talking about it, know that it will be entitled to an update to Lollipop at the beginning of next year.
Otherwise, well know that it is currently offered around 229 €.
Design & Ergonomics
Don't expect metal, glass, wood or even bamboo, the Aquaris E5 4G goes straight to the point and its shell gives pride of place to plastic.
Yes, but it does it well and its lines are ultimately very reminiscent of those of the first Nokia. Fun fact, BQ made the choice to cover part of the borders of its terminal with a plastic piece, but the latter does not go up to the front of the device. Fortunately, this is not disturbing when the terminal is held in hand.
At the front of the terminal and on each side of the screen, we will find the front camera, the speaker and three sensitive buttons placed under the screen. I admit that I do not understand this choice at all. Android handles touch buttons very well and I would have preferred that the manufacturer opted for this solution.
The back of the case is very soft to the touch. BQ has opted for a mat and plain plastic coating.
The ergonomics are quite traditional. Three physical buttons are placed on the right edge of the device. They give access to powering up the terminal, and they will also allow us to adjust its sound volume. However, there is no shutter button and it's a shame because it's still very useful when you take a lot of pictures.
On the other side, on the left edge, we will come face to face with two hatches concealing the micro SIM ports. BQ has opted for an opening system close to what Apple offers on iPhones. It will therefore be necessary to slide a pinhead into the hole in the trap door to bring it out. The manufacturer had the very good idea to put a dedicated accessory in the box and it would be better to keep it carefully aside since it will also have to be used to… open the hatch giving access to the micro SD card.
A hatch placed on the upper edge of the terminal, not far from the headphone jack.
The micro USB port, for its part, is placed on the lower edge.
The Aquaris E5 4G is a beautiful object, it is a fact, and it is also very pleasant to handle. However, is it devoid of flaws? No, of course ! Apart from the sensitive buttons, the only thing I have a problem with is its door for micro SD cards. If you are used to changing cards regularly , you should remember to take a paperclip or the small accessory with you. It is not necessarily super practical.
In addition, I have the impression that the screen is also very sensitive to fingerprints. As a result, it may be wise to buy a protective plastic film to limit the effect. This will save you from having to wipe it off every hour.
And we end with the video that goes well. This is my first time running a test with my Nikon D810 so I will ask you to be indulgent. Thank you in advance ! Ah and if you have any questions, the comments are there for that.
