Sony organized a special evening yesterday to celebrate the launch of the Xperia Z3 range in France. Your humble servant was obviously there, not far from the glasses of champagne and the petits fours. He obviously took the opportunity to approach the Z3 Compact , and here is the summary of this brief but brilliant meeting. With a bonus video, because you're worth it.
It has been a few years now that the great builders of this world have declined their flagships in different models that are more resistant, larger or even smaller. Sony is no different, but it has a smarter strategy in place.
Unlike its competitors, if it reduces the size of its phones, it makes sure to keep the same raw computing power. The Z1 Compact ( tested here ), for example, inherited the technical sheet from the Z1 ( tested here ) and the same obviously goes for the Z3 Compact which is very reminiscent of its big brother.
Like a Z3, but smaller
Aesthetically, it is even the perfect copy. The rounded edges are part of the game, as are the plastic reinforcements located on the corners of the device. The finishes are similar, and this is rather good news since the Z3 sets the bar very high on this ground. And if you doubt it, maybe you should go read my review . It is a beautiful beast, not to doubt it, and the same goes for its technical sheet.
There, well we are entitled to a 4.6-inch screen capable of displaying a definition of 720p type , with Triluminos and X-Reality technologies which go well. On the processor side, we can count on a Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.5 GHz , coupled with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM . The storage space reaches 16 GB, with a port that can accept micro SD cards up to 128 GB.
The Z3 Compact is not left out in the photo part with a sensor of 20.7 million pixels (12,800 ISO max), a front camera of 2.2 million pixels and all the usual technologies. Finally, its 2600 mAh battery is supposed to allow it to last no less than two days without needing to be recharged. I was obviously not able to verify this point last night.
It is never easy to get an idea of a product in a few minutes – there were a lot of people in addition – but I admit I was pleasantly surprised by the finish of the device. It is thin, light and really very pretty to look at, especially in these two new versions.
Afterwards, many of you also wonder if the two Z3s are scratch sensitive or not. I admit not having tempted the devil either, but I've been walking around with the Z3 in my pocket for three weeks, leaving it lying around on the desk or on the living room table, and I have absolutely no scratch neither in one direction nor the other.
We end with the video that goes well. I tell you frankly, this is not the best. Just know that it was filmed hand-held with the D810, and while there were a lot of bad journalists pushing me behind. This perhaps explains it, moreover.
