Google has long offered a two-step identification method. The latter is based on the joint use of a password and a verification code sent by text message to the user's phone. From now on, the latter will be able to opt for a third solution based on the use of a security key . And if you want to set it up on your account, then you've come to the right place.
The idea is quite simple actually. When you have activated this feature, then all you have to do is enter your account code and then insert this famous usb key into a port of your computer to access your emails or documents.
No need for a phone, in short.
Prepare the terrain
If adventure tempts you, then you will need two or three odds and ends. First and not least, this function is only available from Chrome 38 . It is therefore impossible to use it on Firefox, for example, or even on Safari and Opera. Fortunately, if for some reason you have to log in from a machine without Google's browser, then Google will automatically switch you to the usual identification method.
Then, well, you will need … a security key. The solution developed by Google is based on the Fido Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) standard and all devices compatible with it are therefore supported by the firm.
What does it mean ? Quite simply that you will have to go to the cash register but do not panic because these keys are not very expensive. You can find one on Amazon for less than 6 €, by going to this address .
Add a security key to your Google account
Then, you will have to configure your account and thus link the security key that you have just obtained with it.
Start by making sure that the latter is not connected to your computer. When it's done, go here and identify yourself to your account using the usual method.
Google will then ask you if you want to enable two-step verification, at least if you haven't already. Click on the blue button to accept this charming proposal. Then proceed with the “Configure” button and follow all the steps by entering your phone number and answering the questions asked by the assistant.
Then return to this page . Now, serious things can begin. All you have to do is click on the gray “Save” button and insert the usb stick into a port on your computer. If the device is equipped with a button, it will have to be pressed so that it can connect to Google's servers. When this is done, the firm will associate it with your account.
Okay and then, how will it be for the rest of the operations? Very simply in fact. When you need to identify yourself to your account, well you will have to start by entering your password. Big G will then ask you to enter your security key, and it will identify you in the process.
Not having a security key at home, I have not yet activated this function on my account but I think that I will soon be tempted.
