Lenovo is no longer number one in computer sales in the world. The Chinese manufacturer was dethroned by Hewlett-Packard Inc., better known as HP. According to a study conducted by research firm Gartner , HP achieved more than twelve million PC sales in the second quarter of 2017. These figures correspond to an increase of 20.8% compared to last year.
According to Gartner, it's been five consecutive quarters that HP sales have increased significantly. The firm also revealed in a press release that it is mainly in the US market that the brand has sold the most PCs, desktops and laptops combined.
In second place of the best sales for the second quarter, we find of course Lenovo, then Dell at the foot of the podium.
Lenovo sales are down
Just a few weeks ago, Lenovo was the world leader in PC sales. The brand saw a big drop in the second quarter of 2017, however. Figures showed its worldwide shipments fell 8.4%, or around 12.1 million PCs sold.
It should be noted that this fall was mainly recorded in key regions over a full year.
Mitako Kitagawa, senior analyst at Gartner, explains that this situation could be caused by a change in strategy on the part of the Chinese manufacturer. She argues that Lenovo would be more focused on a way to protect its margins than to increase its market share.
Dell comes third after Lenovo
In third place, we have Dell which managed to achieve a gain of 1.4% in the second quarter of 2017, which equates to almost ten million units sold. Still according to Gartner, the American manufacturer has posted five consecutive positive quarters. Its worldwide deliveries gradually increased over a full year.
This is good news for Dell whose PC sales are a priority this year.
After Dell comes Apple, but with a decline of 4.3% in the second quarter, or less than 61.1 million units sold. Also in this dynamic, the Asia-Pacific market also recorded a decline of 5.1%, or around twenty million PCs sold during the second quarter.
If Gartner is to be believed, global computer shipments are expected to continue to decline this year.
