Since the advent of Google Maps, finding a particular location in different parts of the world has become quite easy. The application allows users to access the desired location by following the instructions given on the maps. Although Google Maps is a very handy tool, sometimes it is necessary to check the information well before following it to avoid serious accidents like the one which recently happened in Akole city in India.
According to an Indian Express article, a 34-year-old man named Satish Ghule was killed by drowning after following directions on Google Maps . He was driving to Kalsubai, the highest peak in Maharashtra.
Ghule had planned to hike Kalsubai with two other people, Sameer Rajurkar and Guru Shekhar.
The course of events
According to reports, Shekhar, 42, is the general manager of the Pimpri Chinchwad company and the employer of Ghule. As for Rajurkar, 44, he is a businessman and friend of the deceased.
According to the Indian Express report, the incident took place on Sunday, January 10 at around 1:45 a.m. As the three men drove to their destination, they got lost along the way and decided to search for routes on Google Maps. The app showed them the closest way to get from Kotul to Akole. This path was to pass through a bridge which is currently banned from use for a period of four months after the passage of the monsoon, the reason being the release of water from the Pimpalgaon Khand dam.
As it was dark, the men did not notice that the bridge was not passable and went straight into the water.
A tragic end
According to the police statement, the three men managed to open one of the windows of the car, which was filling with water, to escape. While Shekhar and Rajurkar were able to save themselves, Ghule was trapped because he could not swim.
Although the locals rushed to help them, there was little they could do due to the darkness. Ghule was drafted early on Sunday morning and was immediately taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival there.
It will be recalled that this is not the first time that a person has lost his life after blindly following the instructions of Google Maps.
Recently, in fact, two men got lost on the Bone Route in Siberia . One of them has died, the second is in a worrying state. The two friends just wanted to cross Siberia and they stayed several days in the cold, without suitable clothing.
