The iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max have been available since yesterday morning and we have received a copy of each of these models at the editorial office. They will of course be entitled to a complete test, but in the meantime we invite you to discover their handling.
A quick glance at your calendar will confirm this, but it's Friday, November 13, a very special day for all apple crunchers.
And for good reason, since today is the release of the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max, products that were eagerly awaited by fans of the brand and on which we could not ignore.
If you haven't read it yet, the iPhone 12 Pro test awaits you at this address .
Packaging & Accessories
And we attack directly with the unpacking.
The iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max are sold in boxes quite close to each other, very compact boxes and on which we find product images.
I did say so when I unboxed the iPhone 12 Pro, but Apple decided this year to no longer provide a charger unit and a hands-free kit with its phones, for “ecological” reasons.
In France, on the other hand, the legislation requires manufacturers to deliver their smartphones with headphones and this is obviously the case here since the two iPhone 12s were delivered in a cardboard box where a pair of headphones had been slipped.
Interesting detail, to help us dissociate its ranges more easily, the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max are delivered in boxes of different colors, with white for the first and black for the second.
When we open them, we fall directly on smartphones. The back is not protected, unlike the front which is covered by a recycled cardboard film.
Below the phones, we will find a box that contains the documentation, a store and the pin allowing access to the maps. The charge / synchro cable is placed below.
And that's all. Apple has therefore kept to the bare minimum and we must admit that it hurts a little for smartphones that go up to € 1,200.
To be honest with you, I think it would have been quite relevant to slip a MagSafe charger into the iPhone 12's boxes just to promote this technology a bit.
Design & Ergonomics
The iPhone 12 Mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max are positioned a bit at both ends of the range, both in terms of price and size. And obviously, when you put them next to each other, it feels a bit weird.
From the front, we find the same fundamentals. A screen surrounded by very thin borders, a notch housing the Face ID sensors, a chin of exemplary finesse, all the usual ingredients answer the call.
But of course, in terms of size, we are dealing with products that are very different from each other. With its 5.4 inches diagonal, the iPhone 12 Mini is remarkably compact and it will be quite possible to use it with one hand. Unlike the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which impresses with its gigantism.
And be careful, because it's not just a question of size either. The iPhone 12 Mini is a real lightweight with a weight of only 133 grams, against 226 grams for the Max.
The Ceramic Shield is present on both models. Be careful, however, because it is important to note that if this treatment makes the glass very resistant to impacts, it is quite sensitive to scratches.
In both cases, there are flat slices. Be careful, however, because Apple has not opted for the same materials and the iPhone 12 Mini is thus satisfied with an aluminum hoop, against stainless steel for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
There are also differences in the back. In both cases, there is a glass plate, but that of the iPhone 12 Mini displays a glossy finish, against a matte finish for the Max. Needless to say, but I much prefer the matt back of the second model.
Another distinctive point is the photo module. That of the iPhone 12 Mini consists of only two sensors and two focal lengths. We therefore lose the telephoto lens. The iPhone 12 Pro Max offers three different sensors, with a stabilized main sensor and larger than that of the Pro model.
I obviously expect a lot from the iPhone 12 Pro Max in the field of photography … and video.
No difference for the rest. The buttons are placed in the same places and we still have that good old Lightning connector that makes resistance.
The iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max are very different products from each other and you just need to hold them in your hand for a few minutes to achieve it.
In reality, these two models are even very representative of the race for diversification in which Apple has embarked. A very interesting strategic choice, which mainly aims to put an iPhone between each hand.
The iPhone 12 Mini will be the first to pass the test bench. Then comes the turn of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I'm also preparing some video bonuses for you, so now is a good time to subscribe to the channel if you haven't already .
