Apple will launch its new range of premium smartphones, the iPhone 13, next fall. We will have to wait several more months to find out what they have in store for us, but that's without counting on the leakers and other confidential sources.
Rumors have indeed been rife since the end of last year and not a week goes by without a new leak emerging in the dark corners of the web. So much so that it is sometimes difficult to have an overview of what is being said around these smartphones.
Please note, this article will be updated regularly, depending on new rumors. At the bottom you will find the date on which it was last edited.
The purpose of this file is precisely to make things easier for you by synthesizing all the rumors around iPhone 13. It will be regularly updated.
Design & Ergonomics
Apple has significantly diversified its offering over the years. The brand was indeed limited to one new smartphone per year, but this rule no longer applies today.
Last October, the firm lifted the veil on four distinct high-end smartphones: the iPhone 12 Mini, the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The idea was indeed to put an iPhone between each hand and thus make the range more accessible.
Will it be the same for the iPhone 13? It is a possibility and the most recent rumors thus point out once more of four distinct models.
The iPhone 13 Mini and the iPhone 13 would target the general public, with prices that would remain unchanged and some sacrifices in terms of the photo. However, it would be possible to turn to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max to break these limits and be entitled to all the latest innovations of the brand in this area.
Most sources agree that the iPhone 13 should not be very different from the iPhone 12. The chassis would remain broadly the same and we should always expect to find glass and metal, with slices. flat.
On the other hand, the notch of the iPhone 13 could potentially gain in compactness and thus be a little smaller than that of the current models. Apple would indeed intend to completely review the Face ID module to reduce the number of sensors … and at the same time the space occupied by the room.
Some sources also mention the return of Touch ID, in the form of a sensor directly integrated into the screen. Apple has even developed a prototype. However, it is not known whether this solution will be adopted.
Another design change is expected. This time it concerns the rear photo module. Rather than covering each optic with a plate of sapphire glass, Apple would consider extending its protection to the entire room. If the firm opts for this strategy, then the optics should no longer come out of the module.
Apple should, as usual, take great care of the iPhone 13 screen. We should therefore expect to find HDR, but also full compatibility with the P3 color space.
However, as a bonus, the brand could go further by installing an LTPO panel on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, and therefore a panel that consumes a little less energy. Many also expect the two larger models to achieve a refresh rate of around 120Hz, a feature the iPhone 12s unfortunately had to ignore.
As every year, the iPhone 13 should also mark the arrival of a new SoC, an SoC that will be, as always, much more powerful than that of the past generation. As of yet, however, this chip has yet to be the subject of any rumors. At least outside of this steam chamber which could be used to better cool the innards of the phones.
On the other hand, it is quite different for the photo module. As indicated above, the four models should not be equal on this ground and only the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max would thus be entitled to the three usual focal lengths. On the other hand, Apple would intend to equip the four models with a LiDAR sensor, in order to promote the adoption of the technology.
It should be remembered that the brand has relied heavily on augmented reality in recent years, and that it would work on a headset and connected glasses compatible with ARKit. But for these devices to work, augmented reality should already be democratized. Embedding LiDAR on all iPhone 13s could help.
Other sources also believe that the mechanical stabilization of the iPhone 12 Pro Max could be extended to all iPhone 13s.
For our part, however, we doubt the validity of this information. Embedding such a complex system on phones like the iPhone 13 Mini or the iPhone 13 would make little sense. On the other hand, we would very much like the brand to extend this function to the sensors placed under the telephoto lenses of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
5G should, unsurprisingly, still be there. Apple cannot indeed go back. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 could also support WiFi 6E, which would result in higher speeds in this configuration.
Unsurprisingly, the flagship functions of the iPhone 13 have not yet been mentioned by the usual leakers.
Rumors also follow their own chronology; the first noises from the corridor systematically relate to the design and ergonomics of the devices and it is generally necessary to wait several months before the first information relating to their functions emerges.
In this specific case, it may be useful to remember that iOS 15 will be presented during WWDC 2021 and therefore in June. The first rumors relating to the platform should therefore appear, at best, in May.
Pricing & Availability
You know, the launch of the iPhone 12 has been somewhat chaotic due to the global health situation.
The phones were thus not presented in September, but in October. With the added bonus of a staggered launch. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro were indeed marketed before the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
This year, however, everything should be fine. In any case, that is to be hoped for, even if this delayed launch has made things considerably easier for us on our side.
