On Friday, December 18, 2020, Vice President Mike Pence and senior defense officials held a press conference in which the names of the members of the US Space Force (USSF) were announced.
If you've never heard of it before, know that it is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for conducting military operations in space. The USSF was created by the Trump administration in October 2018. It was previously known as the US Air Force Space Command (AFSPC), reports Universe Today .
The decision was formalized on December 20, 2019 with the ratification of the National Defense Authorization Act for 2020 (NDAA 2020). The USSF has since taken steps to emphasize that it is a separate branch of the Armed Forces.
A name that dates back to 1983
For example, this branch of the US Armed Forces has its own logo and motto as well as its own headquarters. A recruitment video and a training program are also specially assigned to him. Its first mission, conducted with the United States Air Force (USAF) , was to send the X-37B spacecraft into space to demonstrate certain technologies.
In honor of their first anniversary, Vice President Mike Pence announced the names of the members of the USSF. He thus declared:
We just returned from the Oval Office. That is why I have the honor, on behalf of the President of the United States, to announce that from now on, the men and women of the United States space force will be known as the Guardians. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Guardians will defend our nation for generations to come!
Apparently, the name "Guardians" or Guardians has a long history in space operations. It goes back to the motto of the Air Force Space Command in 1983 which is "Guardians of the High Frontier" or "Guardians of the High Frontier".
The Space Force logo, strongly inspired by Star Trek?
The USSF also explained in a declaration issued on December 18 that “ the possibility of appointing a force is a capital responsibility. Today, after a year-long process that produced hundreds of submissions and research involving space professionals and members of the general public, we can finally share with you the name we will be known by: Guardians . The name Guardians connects our proud heritage and culture with the important mission we carry out 24/7, protecting the people and interests of the United States and its allies. "
Speaking of culture, the Space Force logo is reminiscent of the Star Trek franchise. However, US officials assure once again that this is linked to history, the USAF has indeed used the delta symbol since 1961 and the USAF Space Command has used the same symbol since its inception in 1983.
In any event, the distinctive roles of the USSF vis-à-vis the USAF are not yet very clearly defined, as so far the USSF manages the tasks normally assigned to the USAF.
However, the future may help this branch of the US military to stand out more and more.
