MediaTek makes its comeback with two new chips positioned on a premium segment, the Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200 . They will have a lot to do since they will come into direct confrontation with the Snapdragon 888 , the Snapdragon 870 , the Exynos 2100 and the Kirin 9000 .
MediaTek, you may know, is a very well established company in China, where it supplies a lot of different manufacturers.
However, and contrary to what one might think, the founder's chips are not all intended for smartphones. They also sometimes equip speakers or connected objects.
Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200, two high-end SoCs
The Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200, for their part, were designed for smartphones and tablets. These two SoCs will thus complete the Dimensity 1000C, a chip presented at the end of last year and that we were able to discover in the LG Velvet .
These two chips of course share many points in common, starting with the finesse of their engraving. MediaTek has indeed engraved them in 6 nm, against 7 nm for the Dimensity 1000C. A difference in size that allows these two SoCs to offer more power and better energy consumption.
The CPU, to start at the beginning, uses the architecture of the Dimensity 1000C while replacing the Cortex-A77 cores by Cortex-A78, including one which will be pushed to 3 GHz for the most demanding calculations. Still according to the manufacturer, this change will give much more power to the two chips and it will be the same for the NPU, with a gain of around 12.5%.
No clear break, but significant improvements over the Dimensity 1000C
The GPU does not change. The Dimensity 1000C, 1100 and 1200 are on a par on this ground and all three opt for a Mali-G77MP9. A chip powerful enough to run the biggest games worry-free, and with high refresh rates. In its press release, MediaTek indicates that the Dimensity 1100 will support 144 Hz screens and that the Dimensity 1200 will be able to go up to 168 Hz.
Regarding the photo, the two chips will not be quite on the same footing. The Dimensity 1100 will thus support sensors that can go up to a definition of 108 million pixels, against 200 million for the Dimensity 1200.
Beautiful contributions, therefore, but which do not mark a clear break with the previous generation. The Dimensity 1100 and 1200 indeed take the architecture of the Dimensity 1000C while seeking to sublimate it, and we must admit that this is a bit of a shame.
On the other hand, we will have to wait to see the arrival of the first smartphones running on these chips to judge their power and flexibility.
