Prerequisite

Before we go any further, it should be noted that setting up Netflix parental controls can only be done on a web browser. The mobile application certainly has a menu for this purpose, but when you tap on it, you are automatically redirected to a mobile web page.

In addition, several types of control are offered in order to better protect minors and effectively meet the needs of parents. In particular, it is possible to block content using a PIN code depending on the age of the user. The parental control system set up by Netflix also makes it possible to restrict access to specific titles. And for more reliability, you can configure each profile individually. Added to this is the possibility of maintaining control over the viewing activity.

Content blocking based on age

The programs offered by Netflix are classified according to the age of the Internet user. Four categories are available, among others, young children (under 7), children (over 7), adolescents (over 13) and adults (over 16). You can use these ratings to specify what content your kids can watch. It should be noted, however, that the maturity assessment may vary from country to country. For more information on this, see this page .

Either way, you can add a PIN code to prevent your kids from accessing shows they shouldn't see. Here is how to configure parental controls according to age:

  • Click on your profile icon in the upper right corner of the page
  • Click on Account
  • Scroll down to the Settings section and click Parental Controls
  • Enter the account password
  • Enter a four-digit PIN code and click Save
  • Then define your preferences according to the maturity levels

Block specific titles using a PIN code

Rating by maturity level is an easy way to prevent your kids from watching inappropriate shows or movies on Netflix for their age.

However, you may have your own reasons for not allowing them to view specific content. By making it possible to block the titles of their choice with a PIN code, the platform wishes to allow adults to better watch over minors. To do this, here is the step to follow:

  • Click on your profile picture in the upper right corner of the page
  • Click on Account
  • Scroll down to the Settings section and click Parental Controls
  • You will need to enter the account password to access the settings
  • Enter a four-digit PIN code and click Save
  • Scroll down to the "Restrict specific titles" section
  • Start typing the name of the TV show or movie and a list should appear
  • Click on the name and it will be added to the shortlist

Define specific restrictions for each profile

One of the parental control methods Netflix offers is to configure restrictions specific to each profile. In fact, the platform allows us to create individual profiles for our children.

Being able to define your preferences in this area thus makes it possible to strengthen restrictive measures.

You should know that when you open the video on demand service web page for the first time, the available profiles are automatically displayed. To configure the restrictions, simply click on "Manage profiles". Otherwise, access the same setting by going to Account> My Profile> Manage Profiles.

To create a profile, click on “Add Profile” (the large plus icon). Then add a name, then click on “Child? To limit the content to what is suitable for children under 12. Once the profile has been created, go to the profile management menu again, then click on the name of the profile you want to configure.

If this is a profile for children only, the “Movies and TV shows allowed for” menu will have two options: “For children only” and “For older children”. For a standard profile, the menu will include the options: “For teenagers and younger people” and “All maturity levels”. All you have to do is define your preferences.

Keep a check on the viewing activity!

Profiles reserved for children do not allow access to the “Account” page, but nothing prevents them from opening another profile. To realize the situation before it's too late, consider keeping an eye on the viewing history. To do this, click on your avatar, then on Account. Then scroll down to the "My Profile" section and click "History".
