Owl, a new population of blue whales has been discovered in the Indian Ocean

Salvatore Cerchio, director of the African Aquatic Conservation Fund's Cetacean Program , and his friends recently reported to us in the journal Endangered Species Research, the discovery of a new species of blue whale.

Recorded for the first time in Madagascar , in 2017, the songs of this still unknown giant of the seas have been reported in various regions of the Indian Ocean .

According to the researchers, while the characteristics of the song frequencies of this new variety of blue whales appear to be similar to those of other species already listed, after some extensive examination, it turned out that they are in fact different.

This discovery surprised specialists

After their signaling off Madagascar, these songs have also been recorded west of the Arabian Sea (Middle East), off the coast and finally in the Chagos Archipelago , a group of islands located in the middle of the Indian Ocean. About 3,500 kilometers separated the places where these calls were recorded.

In addition, a handful of hours after recording these songs, the blue whales were spotted near the coast of Oman.

For information, the Indian Ocean was supposed to host only one population of blue whales. But these signals demonstrate that this is in fact not the case, according to Cerchio and his team who have studied the nature and characteristics of the signals.

Exactly, they noticed differences between the characteristics of the sounds emitted by this unidentified population, even if they are very similar to those of other blue whales, whether it is in relation to the low frequency or the pauses.

It is crucial to study this new species

In order to ensure the survival of this population recently discovered from human activities such as fishing, hunting and many other threats, it is crucial to study it more closely according to the researchers.

Indeed, although it is not yet listed, we have to admit that the existence of animals of this genus is unfortunately still threatened. Moreover, Cerchio and his team believe that this new population of blue whales would be composed of survivors of a previous wild hunt.

In order to preserve these marine mammals, it is therefore essential to know more about their methods of migration, reproduction and survival, according to the researchers. To do this, they will have to place more microphones in various areas of the ocean, hoping that by then nothing will happen to these whales.
