Snapdragon 8cx, the chipset designed for Windows 10

Qualcomm has just unveiled the Snapdragon 8cx . The successor to the Snapdragon 850, this new processor designed for Windows 10 devices offers much better performance.

The American founder took advantage of the recent Snapdragon Summit to lift the veil on a new processor intended for computers powered by Windows 10. The Snapdragon 8cx thus replaces the Snapdragon 850. Unlike the latter which was only a modified version of the Snapdragon 845 , the new component has been designed specifically to work on devices powered by Microsoft's operating system. Moreover, according to Qualcomm, the performance gain is huge, because it is twice compared to the Snapdragon 850.

Engraved in 7nm, the Snapdragon 8cx is supposed to consume less power. It is therefore suitable for tablets and PCs offering Always-On technology.

What's even more promising is that the performance of the 8cx when running native Windows ARM apps is expected to rival that of an Intel Core i5 processor.

Performance comparable to that of a Core i5 processor

It should be noted that the Snapdragon 850 had beaten the Core i5-6300U in multi-core in the benchmarks, while the difference was minor in single core despite the domination of the Intel processor. Given the performance of its predecessor, it is logical that eventually Snapdragon 8cx also be a powerful Core i5 8 generation.

To be highly efficient, the new SoC adopts Kryo 495 cores. In addition, its Adreno 680 graphics processor is capable of supporting two screens displaying 4K HDR with a rate of 120 frames per second. For connectivity, the Snapdragon 8cx supports the Bluetooth 5.0 standard. It incorporates an X24 Cat.20 LTE modem with a theoretical download speed of 2 Gb / s and 316 Mbit / s for upload.

According to Gsmarena , the Hexagon 685 DSP will make the experiences with voice assistants such as Cortana and Alexa more enjoyable.

A release towards the third quarter of next year

Although the Snapdragon 8cx is official, that doesn't mean that manufacturers of Windows 10 computers can already use it.

Indeed, the new processor should be released during the third quarter of 2019. In any case, it looks relatively attractive. We therefore expect adoption by major manufacturers. Finally, note that the Snapdragon 8cx will be compatible with the Quick Charge 4+ fast charging protocol.
