Sony SPA-CK20M review

Sony Mobile is used to announcing with great fanfare these Xperia smartphones at events such as MWC or CES but for small accessories it is more discreet. The SPA-CK20M smartphone vehicle holder appeared shortly after the announcement of the Sony Xperia Z1, it replaces the CK100 Vehicle Kit which was still Sony Ericsson badged.

The box contains the SPA-CK20M smartphone vehicle holder, a hand strap, a cleaning sponge for the suction cup, assembly instructions and warranty. Note the presence of the sponge which is welcome to keep a powerful suction cup. The wrist strap secures the holder and the smartphone to the dashboard in the event of failure of the suction cup. An adhesive (self-adhesive) surface is also provided to hold the device to the dashboard.

The support

Like any car holder, the SPA-CK2M is very simple with a swivel head , an adjustable base (in length and width) and of course the suction cup .

The suction cup engagement system is basic. One push and one twist is all it takes to lock the stand securely. Much easier than the classic tongue which requires a certain force in the thumb, for unlocking nothing more, a rotation is enough.

The suction cup has good suction power and can be cleaned without difficulty with the sponge supplied in the box, which prolongs its life. On a journey of 8 hours, the support was only released once, probably because of the rounded shape of the dashboard (Peugeot 206). On a flat dashboard, there should be nothing to worry about as long as it is a clean minimum. There is also a cover for the suction cup to protect it from dust when it is in the glove box.

The holder is adjustable in width thanks to a spring slide which allows to hold the smartphone firmly.

The length adjustment is made with two small notched tabs.

The kit officially supports smartphones with a maximum thickness of 15mm and a width between 54mm and 76mm. The Sony Xperia Z1, even with a Case Mate Barely There case, can be accommodated by the SPA-CK20M. It should allow easy access to the physical keys of the majority of smartphones on the market.

The bracket can either be placed on the dashboard or on the windshield. I have a preference for the first mode because it allows to have the screen closer to either for the indications of Google Maps.

Conclusion

The spring loaded slide puts too much pressure on the smartphone to hold it. Consequently, telephones with an unlocking button and / or volume keys on the edge must necessarily be fixed so that the buttons are facing down. A four-clamp system would have been more to my liking.

My Sony Xperia Z1 has a protective shell and despite its thinness, the SPA-CK20M seems to be torturing itself to accommodate the smartphone. Without a shell, the support breathes a little more. So if you have a thicker cover (flip-cover or shockproof bumper type) be prepared to remove it.

Sony Spa Ck20m Review 13

The SPA-CK20M retails for a suggested price of € 59 on the Sony Mobile website, which is more expensive than most vehicle mounts available on the market. More expensive, but not more functional; indeed this kit fulfills its contract as much for a Sony Xperia as for another smartphone but it does nothing more to be able to justify this price, except to buy a Sony support to be more corporate and especially to be able to be 100% sure that it is compatible with your Xperia.
