Use a custom domain name on Tumblr

Tumblr is used by millions of people around the world. It is even possible that you have created a few blogs on the platform. And now, you want to step up a gear and use a real personalized domain name that is more in keeping with your identity and that of your site. No problem, it's completely possible and it's not complicated to do.

The first thing you are going to need, of course, is … a domain name! The good news is that they are not particularly hard to obtain and you can order one from Gandi , 1and1 or OVH .

Use A Custom Domain Name On Tumblr

Set up a custom domain on Tumblr? It's not very complicated.

It will obviously be necessary to create an account immediately, and wait for the green light from the service provider before taking the next step, and therefore before getting your hands dirty. There, well the procedure is based on two distinct steps: configuring the DNS of the domain name , and modifying the settings of Tumblr .

The second is obviously common to all providers, but the same is not true for the first and here is very precisely what you will have to do for each of them:

For Gandi:

  • Open your browser and go to the address “ www.g Cadeaux ”.
  • Log into your account.
  • Click on the domain name to modify.
  • Click on the “Manage Zones” link.
  • Enter the IP 66.6.44.4 in the “@ – Type A” field.
  • Click the "Save" button.

For 1and1:

  • Open your browser and go to the address “ admin.1and1.fr “.
  • Log into your account.
  • Select the domain name to modify.
  • Click on the option “Manage domain names”.
  • Check the box for your domain name.
  • Click the "Domain Settings" button.
  • Look for the option “Change DNS settings” in the list.
  • Click on the “Other IP Address” option in the “Advanced DNS Settings” area.
  • Enter the IP 66.6.44.4 in the “IPv4 Address” field.
  • Click the "Save" button.

For OVH:

  • Open your browser and go to “ www.ovh.com “.
  • Log into your account.
  • Click on your domain name on the left, in the Manager.
  • Click on the "DNS Zone" tab on the right.
  • Click on the pencil located on the line of the type “A” field (s).
  • Enter the IP 66.6.44.4 in the “Target” field.
  • Click on the “Next” button to validate.

Congratulations, you have done the hard part. Now all you have to do is tinker with your Tumblr to link the new domain name of your site to the old one. Just make sure you wait a few hours for the DNS to propagate.

Start by going to the service, by clicking on this link . Make sure you select the right site, or blog, then just click on the little nut at the very top to the right. Do the same with the little pencil placed to the right of your URL.

A few items appear on the screen, just in a row below the item. Activate the use of a custom domain by clicking on the slider, then enter the new address of your site. Then click on the “Test domain” link to make sure everything is working, and validate by pressing the “Save” button.

Normally, if you haven't messed up, everything will work fine. Come on, we're going to cross our fingers that this is the case.

This topic has already been mentioned on the intactearnings, but my previous article was not as complete.
