WhatsApp exploded all New Years records

The New Year's celebrations were carried out peacefully and with respect for social distancing measures. To limit the spread of the virus, authorities have been forced to ban gatherings. Many people therefore found themselves isolated from their loved ones. Fortunately, thanks to social networks they were able to keep in touch with their friends and family members.

In a statement issued on 1 January 2021, the Facebook group said that services such as Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram were very busy throughout the year 2020. He said that video calls were part features most popular with users. Mark Zuckerberg's firm went on to reveal that it had set historic records during the New Year.

We learn in particular that WhatsApp is the application that was used the most during New Years Eve.

Over 1.4 billion calls made via WhatsApp during the New Year

Facebook ended the year on a high note. In his statement, he revealed that 1.4 billion video and audio calls were made via WhatsApp on New Year's Eve. This represents an increase "of more than 50% compared to the same day last year. "

On the other hand, more than 55 million live were broadcast through Facebook and Instagram during New Years Eve. On the Messenger side, people have favored the use of effects in augmented reality to welcome the new year as it should. In the United States, group video calls (more than 3 people) on Messenger have also been extremely successful.

The result of confinement

The use of social networks has increased considerably since the Covid-19 pandemic. This can be understood. Indeed, during confinement, people had no other choice than to turn to applications such as WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram to continue to interact with their loved ones. Facebook confirms this through its press release.

“Ahead of Covid-19, New Year's Eve generated Facebook's biggest midnight messaging, photo uploading and social sharing spikes across the world. However, in March 2020, the first days of the pandemic produced spikes in traffic that would eclipse New Year's Eve several times – this lasted for months. Behind the scenes, Facebook Engineering has come together to deliver unprecedented efficiency improvements and make our infrastructure more resilient. This year New Years Eve was very different and we had teams of engineers in Facebook apps ready to take care of any problem so that the world could make calls in 2021 ”, said Caitlin Banford, Technical Program Manager at Facebook.

We can say that the confinement has benefited Facebook a lot.
